At Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School, we are committed to ensuring that every child belongs, participates fully and has the opportunity to succeed.

We recognise that children have different strengths and needs. Some children may require additional support, specialist provision or reasonable adjustments to help them access learning and wider school life. High-quality, inclusive and adaptive teaching is the starting point for all children. A child does not need to have a formal diagnosis before the school can identify needs, provide support or consider reasonable adjustments.

Where a child may have special educational needs or disabilities, we use the graduated approach of assess, plan, do, review

Support is planned in response to the child’s identified needs and is reviewed to consider whether it is having the intended impact. Children’s views are sought in ways that reflect their age, needs and communication. We work in partnership with families and, where appropriate, with education, health, social care and local authority services. Access to external services is subject to their referral criteria and availability.

Mrs Smith is Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School’s designated Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator. She is responsible for coordinating SEND provision across the school. Families should usually speak to their child’s class teacher first if they have concerns about their child’s learning, development, wellbeing or access to school. They may also contact Mrs Smith directly.

On Monday and Tuesday, SEND enquiries can be directed to the school office and will be passed to the appropriate member of staff.

Family of Schools SENCO: Charlotte Rhodes

Mrs Rhodes is the Family of Schools SENCO and provides additional advice and support across the local family of schools.

Carla Smith remains Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School’s designated SENCO and retains responsibility for coordinating the school’s SEND provision.

Raising concerns

Families are encouraged to raise concerns with their child’s class teacher or the SENCO at an early stage. This allows the school to consider the concern, review the support in place and agree appropriate next steps.

Parents and carers who wish to make a formal complaint about SEND provision should follow the school’s Complaints Procedure.

Using the school’s Complaints Procedure does not affect any separate statutory rights relating to:

• Education, Health and Care needs assessments
• Education, Health and Care plans
• SEND Tribunal appeals
• disability discrimination
