When families visit Mapperley Plains, I want them to notice three things quickly: children who are happy and engaged, adults who know them well and a school that is ambitious for both learning and character.

Our shared mission is to be kind, be curious and be my best. These words describe the people we want our children to become.

Kindness means treating others with respect and looking after our school and wider community. Curiosity means asking questions, thinking deeply and developing a genuine interest in the world. Being my best means working hard, making good choices and improving from our own starting points. It does not mean that every child must be the same or be the best at everything.

From Nursery to Year 6, children experience a broad and carefully sequenced curriculum that builds their knowledge, vocabulary and confidence. Reading is a central priority because it opens access to every other area of learning.

We also want children to discover their interests and experience success beyond the classroom. Music, performance, sport, clubs, educational visits, outdoor learning and leadership roles all contribute to school life. Our developing OPAL approach is creating more opportunities for active, imaginative and collaborative play.

Inclusion at Mapperley Plains is rooted in care and ambition. We work to identify needs early, remove barriers and make appropriate adjustments so that children can participate fully in learning and the wider life of the school. We work closely with families and other professionals to provide the right support while maintaining high expectations for every child.

Children also help to shape their school. Through roles such as food ambassadors, play detectives, diversity champions, house captains and school councillors, they learn that belonging to a community brings both opportunities and responsibilities. Their views help us understand what is working well and what needs to improve.

As Headteacher, I believe leadership should be visible, communication should be clear and families should know who to speak to. You will often find me at the school gate, in classrooms and around the playground. I want parents and carers to feel welcome and confident that questions or concerns will be listened to and followed up appropriately.

There is much to be proud of at Mapperley Plains and we remain committed to strengthening the school further. We want every child to feel safe and valued, enjoy coming to school and leave us well prepared for the next stage of their education.
