Parent governor election

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are inviting nominations for one parent governor vacancy on the governing body of Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School.

Governors help set the school’s strategic direction, hold leaders to account for educational performance and oversee financial performance. A parent governor has the same responsibilities as every other governor. They bring a valuable parental perspective but do not represent individual parents, handle complaints or act only in the interests of their own child.

Who are we looking for?

We welcome nominations from all eligible parents and carers. You do not need previous governance experience or a particular qualification. Induction, training and support will be provided.

Experience we would particularly welcome

The governing body would particularly welcome candidates with experience in education, including SEND or inclusion, or in law, governance, compliance or organisational risk. These are preferences, not requirements for standing. Community knowledge, lived experience, sound judgement and willingness to learn are equally valuable.

What is involved?

• a four-year voluntary term of office
• preparing for and attending approximately six governing body meetings each year
• undertaking training and taking part in agreed school visits or other governance work
• maintaining confidentiality, declaring interests and acting strategically for every child at Mapperley Plains Primary School.

How to stand

Please read the candidate information pack, complete the self-nomination form and provide a personal statement of no more than 250 words. Return it by email to head@mapperleyplains.notts.sch.uk or in a sealed envelope marked ‘Parent Governor Nomination’ to the school office by 16.00 on Friday 2 October 2026.

If only one eligible candidate stands, they will be elected unopposed. If more than one eligible candidate stands, a secret ballot will take place and each candidate’s statement will be shared with parents and carers in the same format. For an informal conversation before deciding whether to stand, please contact the school office. We will arrange for you to speak with the Chair of Governors or the Headteacher.
