At Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School, we want every child to feel that they belong and can take part fully in school life. We recognise that children have different strengths and needs and that some may require additional support or reasonable adjustments.

High-quality, inclusive and adaptive teaching is the starting point for all children. A child does not need to have a diagnosis before the school can consider support or reasonable adjustments.

Where a child may have special educational needs, we work with the child and their family through a graduated approach of assess, plan, do and review. Provision is planned in response to identified needs and reviewed to consider whether it is having the intended impact. Children’s views are sought in ways that reflect their age, needs and communication.

We consider and make reasonable adjustments to support children’s access to the curriculum and participation in the wider life of the school. Where appropriate, we may also seek advice from relevant education, health, social care and local-authority services. Access to external services is subject to their referral criteria and availability.

Mrs Smith is the school’s designated SENCO.

Families can speak to their child’s class teacher or contact Mrs Smith if they have concerns about their child’s learning, development, wellbeing or access to school. On Monday and Tuesday, SEND enquiries can be directed to the school office and will be passed to the appropriate member of staff.

Mrs Rhodes supports communication and partnership with families. Mrs Smith remains the school’s designated SENCO.

Raising concerns

Families are encouraged to raise concerns with their child’s class teacher or the SENCO at an early stage so that the school can consider the concern and agree appropriate next steps.

Parents and carers who wish to make a formal complaint about provision made by the school should follow the school’s Complaints Procedure.

Using the school’s Complaints Procedure does not affect any separate statutory rights relating to Education, Health and Care needs assessments, Education, Health and Care plans or disability discrimination. Ask Us Nottinghamshire can provide independent information and advice about these processes.
