At Mapperley Plains Primary and Nursery School, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) supports children to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to stay safe, healthy, build positive relationships and prepare for life beyond primary school.
Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory in primary schools. We use SCARF as our core PSHE programme, adapted where necessary to meet the needs of our children and school community.
Parent and Carer Consultation – Autumn 2026
We are currently reviewing our PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education Policy following the revised statutory guidance which came into effect from September 2026.
As part of this review, we are inviting parents and carers to read our proposed policy and curriculum information and share any comments or questions before the policy is presented to the Academic Committee of the Governing Body for approval.
The consultation is open until 4.00pm on Friday 13 November 2026.

Parents and carers are invited to provide feedback using our short consultation form.
All feedback received will be considered before the policy is finalised and presented to governors for approval.
What do children learn?
Our PSHE curriculum is taught through six broad SCARF themes:
Me and My Relationships
Valuing Difference
Keeping Myself Safe
Rights and Responsibilities
Being My Best
Growing and Changing
Learning builds progressively from Nursery to Year 6 and includes relationships, physical and mental health, personal safety, online safety, respectful behaviour, growing up and puberty.
Sex Education
Alongside statutory Relationships Education, Health Education and National Curriculum Science, we provide a small amount of non-statutory Sex Education in Year 6. This is taught in an age-appropriate and sensitive way and builds on previous learning about relationships, bodies, puberty and life cycles.
Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from some or all of the non-statutory Sex Education provided by the school. There is no right to withdraw children from statutory Relationships Education, Health Education or National Curriculum Science.
Further information about our Year 6 Sex Education provision, including the materials used, is available from the school on request and will be shared with Year 6 parents before this teaching takes place.
Viewing teaching materials
We want parents and carers to understand what children are taught. Parents and carers can request to view representative examples of the resources and teaching materials used to teach RSHE. If you would like to view resources or discuss any aspect of our PSHE and RSHE provision, please contact the school office.
